The Ministry of Economy, in cooperation with the Al-Futtaim Group, organized an awareness conference on original and counterfeit car spare parts, the extent of their impact on individuals and society, and highlighting the state’s efforts to raise the efficiency of the regulatory agencies concerned with this matter, with the participation of representatives of 18 federal and local government agencies in the country. At a time when the Ministry of Economy revealed 867 complaints received by the Ministry regarding the automobile and spare parts sector at the level of the emirates of the country since the beginning of 2023 until now.
The Director of the Consumer Protection and Commercial Control Department at the Ministry of Economy, Sultan Ahmed Darwish, confirmed that the UAE has paid great attention to developing an integrated legislative system to combat commercial fraud in the country, in accordance with the best international practices followed in this regard, by issuing and updating proactive federal legislation to prevent fraud. Commercial laws include commercial fraud, consumer protection, trademarks, copyright, related rights, and commercial agency law.
Darwish said in a speech he delivered during the conference: “The automobile sector is one of the vital and active sectors in the country, so the Ministry was keen to apply and implement policies and legislation that aim to protect the country’s markets from counterfeit and counterfeit spare parts, and to take proactive measures to prevent the entry of counterfeit and counterfeit auto spare parts into the country.” State markets.
He added, “The Ministry, in cooperation with the economic departments, organized periodic inspection campaigns on local markets to control cases of commercial fraud, counterfeiting and counterfeiting of trademarks. It also received complaints from the public and merchants, in addition to receiving complaints from the various departments of the Ministry and investigating them, in cooperation with the competent authorities.” The total complaints received by the Ministry in the automotive sector across the seven emirates of the country from the beginning of 2023 until now amounted to regarding 650 complaints, and 217 complaints related to car spare parts.
During the awareness conference, the Ministry of Economy shed light on the actions and cases that are considered commercial fraud, the most prominent of which is announcing fake or unreal prizes or discounts, exploiting commercial advertisements, presenting them, or promising to provide them in misleading promotion and incorrect , or promoting fraudulent, corrupt, or counterfeit goods. Offering, providing or promoting of fraudulent commercial services, and importing, exporting, re-exporting or manufacturing of fraudulent, corrupt and counterfeit goods.
For his part, Head of the Global Aftersales Services Sector at Al-Futtaim Automotive Group, Jawahar Janesh, said: “The group plays a major role that is consistent with its position in the sector, as it continues its commitment to spreading awareness regarding the importance of using original car spare parts, and the risks resulting from resorting to Counterfeit alternatives. The group seeks to contribute to preserving the safety of society and enhancing the automotive value chain in the UAE, by investing in training and launching awareness campaigns.”
In the same context, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology reviewed a working paper on the Emirati system for controlling vehicle spare parts, which includes the Ministry of Industry or the competent authority undertaking the monitoring of vehicle spare parts manufactured and imported into the country’s markets, to ensure their compliance with the mandatory standard specifications. The conference also witnessed a presentation by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, to shed light on the role of the country’s customs sector in protecting intellectual property rights. The conference also touched on the importance of the prominent and vital role of the private sector in enhancing awareness to combat commercial fraud, as it is the primary stakeholder.
