Dmitri Voronkov: The Blue Jackets’ Rising Star and His Homesickness Dilemma

2023-11-26 23:00:48

In 2019, the Blue Jackets acquired Dmitri Voronkov via the draft. The Russian subsequently remained in his country until this season.

In fact, he and the Jackets agreed on the terms of a two-year contract last May. An intriguing detail of this contract is a clause specifying that if he does not make the roster by December, he has the possibility of being loaned to his club in the KHL.

But that’s obviously not a problem since Voronkov is in the Columbus lineup and he’s very good. In 15 games, he has nine points.

However, a concern emerges: the young prodigy is considering a return to his native country, he who feels deeply homesick.

We don’t see that often…

The team’s CEO, Jarmo Kekalainen, said the team would evaluate the case, but “it was normal for a young person to feel far from his country.” Obviously, if Voronkov really decided to leave for Russia, it would be a big loss for Pascal Vincent’s troupe.

He is one of the most involved attackers. And in Montreal, we will remember him as a guy who was not afraid. In his first NHL game, he threw down the gloves once morest a certain Arber Xhekaj.

Voronkov has no command of English at all, a gap that might have been filled in the four years before he arrived in Columbus.

Despite everything, the Jackets did everything to surround the youngster. They gave the mandate to other Russian players like Ivan Provorov, Kirill Marchenko and Yegor Chinakhov to help him acclimatize with his new environment.

Kekalainen plans to present it to Russians in Columbus. Additionally, the potential involvement of Fedor Tyutin, a former NHL defenseman and Ohio resident, offers a mentoring prospect, as has been the case in the past with Marchenko.

Although the organization does everything it can to support Voronkov, the challenge remains, especially since he does not speak English and has no family members with him. A reality which can only add to the complexity of his situation. It must indeed be difficult, then. Good luck to him.

He’s not the first nor the last to want to leave Ohio, in any case…
