Hyundai’s Autonomous Passenger Transport: Future Market Trends and Safety Concerns

Autonomous passenger transport, a market of the future for many manufacturers including Hyundai, continues to scare people.

Motional, the American autonomous driving joint venture of the South Korean group Hyundai Motor andAptivhas postponed its plans to launch a commercial Robotaxi service in the United States from late this year 2023 to the middle of next year, at best.

Production of the Robotaxi developed on a technical basis of Hyundai IONIQ 5 has nevertheless started on time at the Hyundai Motor Group’s Singapore Global Innovation Center (HMGICS). This new ultra-modern production unit houses a cell entirely dedicated to this project. Motional stressed that the delay was due to a desire for the vehicle to undergo rigorous inspections and extreme safety verification processes before commercial services begin in 2024.

The company had originally planned to begin paid operations of its robotaxi in Las Vegas, Nevada, in December. However, it decided to slow down the pace following public opinion on robotaxis in the United States deteriorated. General Motors (GM) subsidiary Cruise suspended its robotaxi service following just three months due to chain accidents. Its CEO was even forced to resign.
