Midday blessing broadcast live on TV

On Sunday, Francis skipped his weekly appearance at a window above St. Peter’s Square and gave the traditional midday blessing, broadcast live on television, from the chapel of the Vatican hotel where he lives. He might not show himself to the believers at the window “because I have this problem of inflammation of the lungs,” said Francis. A priest sitting next to him would read out his, the Pope’s, thoughts of the day in his place. The statements said that he would give his speech at the climate summit on Saturday as planned.

The Pope wore a bandage and apparently a cannula on his right hand. The Vatican did not initially respond to a question from the AP news agency as to whether he was being treated intravenously.

Contradictory statements

On Saturday, the Vatican said Francis, who had part of a lung removed as a young man, had undergone a CT scan at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to rule out lung-related complications. The examination produced a negative result. The discrepancy with Francis’ statement that he had pneumonia was not initially explained.

Francis will be 87 years old in December. After a three-day hospital treatment this year, he himself spoke of pneumonia, the Vatican spoke of bronchitis. He also underwent abdominal surgery a few months ago.
