A mountain hut in the middle of a ski resort would have to sink into a gold mine in winter. One would think so. Because for the Christophorushütte on the Feuerkogel, at 1,593 meters above sea level, the operation is no longer profitable. The operators pull the ripcord and no longer open in winter. The decision didn’t come from a whim, say the innkeepers Sandra Peitli and Andreas Dengg.
“Unfortunately, in the winter season the costs eat us up. Electricity, rent, heating, personnel. Unfortunately, with 13 outdated night storage heaters, a deficit is programmed and there is no funding for young entrepreneurs,” it said in a statement. Just because the guest garden is full when the weather is nice, the hut is “unfortunately not a gold mine”. If the weather is bad, no one comes, many people forget that.
“Since we are always looking for solutions and don’t want to just give up, we are now concentrating on summer tourism. And here especially on weddings, bridal showers or birthday parties,” it says. The diocese, which leases the hut on the Feuerkogel, supports the operators “in all matters”. “But given the high fixed costs, we had to make these decisions.”
Being a hut owner isn’t just regarding having fun, serving Zirberl and entertaining guests. For the self-employed there would be difficult and serious decisions.
Good news from the Riederhütte
The Riederhütte in the eastern Höllengebirge, which was unable to open in the summer due to a lack of tenants, will also remain closed this winter season. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel: the responsible Ried Alpine Club section has already agreed on a new tenant from the region. Only the signature is still missing.
