Havelberg. – For some it comes gradually, for others it occurs acutely: Parkinson’s disease. The symptoms are different, as are the treatment options. For many people, self-help groups are a good thing so that those affected can exchange ideas. Two Havelberg women who are still organized in Stendal also see it that way. They have launched a call to found such a regional group in Havelberg.
So far, the two women have been going to Stendal, where there is a Parkinson’s group. Women and men from all over the district come there. Because this involves long journeys, the Havelberg women want to try forming a group here. At the same time, they are also for the Stendaler group, which is happy regarding growth. In both cases, people suffering from Parkinson’s disease and their relatives who are interested can contact the Paritätisches self-help contact point in Stendal. The contact person is Astrid Elling, telephone 0171/8142712, email: aelling@paritaet-lsa.de
A victim from Havelberg reports that she had become slower, had muscle pain, taste disorders, high blood pressure and an internal fluttering at the beginning of her illness. She initially blamed it on Corona. She had just gotten sick with the virus. But it didn’t get better and the symptoms got worse, especially under stress. A visit to the neurologist brought the shocking diagnosis: Parkinson’s disease.
“Many people know that they can no longer hold their coffee cup. But there are actually many different symptoms,” reports the woman from Havelberg, who then decided, together with an acquaintance, to join the self-help group in Stendal. There is a meeting there once a month. “That would also be conceivable here,” she says. The goals of the self-help group are the exchange of experiences among like-minded people, tips and help from those affected, tips on healthy eating, tips for more exercise in everyday life, and joint activities such as swimming or hiking. And also to make friends and have fun together. The two women printed all of this on blue A-5 sheets of paper, which they laid out and hung up in the region.
Fighting alone is stupid
“We are happy when those affected and their relatives get in touch. It’s simply better to talk regarding the disease with people who know what it’s regarding, because fighting alone is stupid,” says the Havelberg native.
Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease following Alzheimer’s disease. Nerve cells are damaged in the brain. “You can’t get rid of the disease. It’s regarding stopping the progression, minimizing the symptoms and, above all, enjoying the day more. This also works very well in a self-help group.”
There was already such a group in Havelberg, perhaps it can be reactivated.
