At the end of a lively race this Sunday in Abu Dhabi, Théo Pourchaire became Formula 2 champion ahead of Dane Frederik Vesti (Prema). The ART Grand Prix driver is the first Frenchman to win the F2 title in its current form (since 2017). In terms of more general results, he succeeds in particular Pierre Gasly and Romain Grosjean, crowned in GP2 at the time, in 2016 and 2011 respectively.

During the decisive race in Abu Dhabi, he showed a mixture of strategic approach and real pugnacity once morest his direct opponent to secure this title with 5th place at the finish. “I’m so happy!” he said. And so tired. I gave everything. I struggled in qualifying (14th) and that made the rest of the weekend difficult. You can see me suffering from time to time but I never give up! I wanted this title so much and also the one for the team. I’m proud of everyone. »

In tears on the radio during the deceleration lap, Pourchaire, winner of only one race this season but very often placed, also experienced strong emotions on the track. Starting on a strategy opposed to his last opponent for the title (who had to take 16 points from him to be titled), the Frenchman found himself wheel in wheel with him around ten laps from the finish. A magnificent battle ensued during several laps where overtaking multiplied, Pourchaire refusing to simply secure a place which would have offered him the title.

A very lively duel on the track

The hottest moment of these battles came on lap 25 when Pourchaire overtook Vesti before finding himself alongside Kush Maini, much slower, at the entrance to the last sector. The latter refusing to give in, the ART driver was forced to cut the track at turns 12 and 13. A maneuver reported by the race direction but which would not go any further. And fortunately because, in the meantime, Vesti had passed, moved up to 3rd place, with a final very heated moment once morest Zane Maloney where the Dane himself almost ended up in the wall at high speed.

Up front, Jack Doohan (Invicta Virtuosi) had an uneventful race from pole position for his third victory of the season. He beat Victor Martins (ART Grand Prix) who is the best rookie of the season with his 5th place in the general classification. This result also allows the French team to secure the team title.
