Pippo Corvino – In crossbars – not at all

2023-11-24 08:27:00

The diverse, almost limitless possibilities of guitar sound production in a complex appearance, alternately accompanied or accompanied by vocals, piano, synthesizer, drums, percussion or acoustically programmed double bass – on his new solo album “In Traverse” (release: November 24th, 23) The Viennese guitarist, producer, sound engineer and studio owner PIPPO CORVINO proves that he knows how to move virtuoso in many musical areas. The musical influences that resonate on “In Traverse” are just as multidimensional as the selection and playing of his guitars and other instruments and come together to form a sonic work of art. PIPPO CORVINO is accompanied and supported by the guest musicians Balázs Balogh (drums, percussion and vocals; arrangements; co-composer of “The Gathering”), Ángela Tröndle (vocals) and Anil Bilgen (solo piano on “A Change of Course” and “The Last Stage”).

As a guitarist, Pippo Corvino – whose real name is Filip Gavranović and who has lived in Vienna since 2016 following completing his jazz guitar master’s degree at the Graz University of Art – has performed numerous concerts and publications, including with the project The Cigarette After or in collaborations with Ángela Tröndle, have long since made a name for themselves in the Viennese music scene and beyond. He is also the proud operator of his own studio, “The BURROW Studio”, where, in addition to his self-taught passion as a producer and sound engineer – a term that Pippo himself tends to reject – he can also pursue his sound research and musical-experimental passions. His multidimensional understanding of and for music was developed early on through his father’s CD collection of bands like Pink Floyd, Mike OldfieldJethro Tull oder Dire Straits before he worked with jazz guitarists like his piano teacher, in addition to solid training in classical guitar Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin or Pat Metheny came into contact.

Pippo Corvino – as a musician, composer and arranger – audibly incorporates all of these musical, instrumental and technical influences into his new album “In Traverse”. The great album artwork (Daniel Domig) already sets the tone for the music that awaits listeners. Everything flows and flows in mostly cheerful pastel tones. Fine gradations, shape changes and color symbioses result in a whole that is as open as it is closed. The opening track “Prologue: A Tale of an Unexpected Guest” impresses with its skilful, dramaturgical structure, which is reflected in both the instrumentation and the arrangement. And on the rest of the album, Pippo Corvino’s brilliant guitar playing creates sparkling, soft, geo-overdubbed, polyphonic melodies, which – accompanied by piano, percussion, a programmed double bass (which can hardly be identified as this) or drums – are like a rainbow without clarity defined beginning and end, shining in the fresh air of a spring morning. Only to change color once more in the next moment – or in the next title – and transition into the midday sun in a sky filled with color nuances, and finally into a picturesque dusk. Pippo Corvino achieves this in an inimitable – sometimes surprising and unexpected, sometimes barely noticeable – but always artfully successful way.

“In Traverse” stands in line with its album predecessors, but without being able to claim an absolute unique selling point. And it equally shows the broad musical cosmos in which Pippo Corvino moves instrumentally and compositionally, as well as its expansion into ever new areas. A definite listening recommendation, not just for guitarists or people with a strong jazz affinity.
