Citing “serious” circulation of COVID-19 and an imminent wave of influenza in Quebec, the national director of public health, Dr. Luc Boileau, invites people at risk to be vaccinated quickly.
Although the situation is different from previous years, the COVID-19 virus is still circulating. At this time of year, increased vigilance is required in order to protect the most vulnerable, avoid congestion in emergency departments and limit the increased burden of respiratory infections on healthcare settings, underlines public health.
Several outbreaks of COVID-19 have also occurred in Quebec hospitals and in seniors’ living environments in recent weeks. Around a hundred hospitalizations are added daily.
More specifically, people aged 60 and over, and especially those over the age of 70, are invited to get a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Boileau adds that people over 70 who have never been infected with the virus are particularly likely to experience complications.
Circulation of the influenza virus, commonly known as the flu, is also increasing, although it is still at a low level. The wave of influenza should arrive in Quebec probably before Christmas
warns Dr. Boileau. We are not yet in the flu season, but it will be unavoidable, it is coming and it is coming quickly
, he continues. Public health is therefore appealing to pregnant women, who are more likely to be ill.
As for the circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (VRS), it is constantly increasing, particularly in pediatric complexes, which affects emergency rooms and pediatric services.
The vaccination campaign continues
Started in October, the vaccination campaign once morest respiratory viruses reached more than 900,000 people. Furthermore, nearly 1.1 million doses once morest influenza have been administered since the start of the campaign.
Vaccination in living environments where there are citizens more at risk, such as residences for the elderly and CHSLDwill continue in the coming weeks.
