Volkswagen will launch a Chinese electric platform for budget cars
Volkswagen said today it will develop a new entry-level electric vehicle platform in China and use more local components to lower costs as the German company seeks to regain lost ground in the world’s largest auto market.
The new architecture, known as A Main Platform, will be tailor-made to suit Chinese consumers’ battery and electric motor tastes, China chief Ralf Brandstätter told reporters during a visit to a new electric vehicle development and procurement center in the central city of Hefei. Chinese new car buyers are younger, tech-savvy and love immersive digital experiences from their cars, he added.
Built on the so-called modular electric drive matrix (MEB), Volkswagen’s existing electric platform in use since 2019, it will primarily use Chinese suppliers and should be ready for a market debut in 2026.
The company said it plans to introduce 10 more electric vehicle models globally by 2026 and speed up time to market for new models from four years to 2.5 years on average for Chinese buyers.
