A 43-year-old man from Genk (province of Limburg) was arrested on Wednesday in the Spanish city of Alicante, suspected of having participated in a shooting in Genk in October. Spanish authorities have received an extradition request to deliver the man to Belgium, the Genk (Carma) local police zone said on Saturday.

On the night of October 8-9, the police were called to a shooting in Weg naar As in Genk. The suspect fled following the incident. The Carma Police Zone immediately rushed to the scene and conducted an extensive search operation in the surrounding area. Law enforcement almost immediately identified the suspect. He then managed to stay under the radar for a while.

Thanks to intensive searches, the police area managed to trace the individual once more. In collaboration with the Spanish liaison officer and police, the suspect was found and arrested on Wednesday in Spain. The procedure for extradition to Belgium has meanwhile started. The Limburg public prosecutor’s office and the Carma police zone are carrying out additional investigations.
