Demi Lovato in Ischgl: From “Pop-Demi” to “Rock-Demi”

The American pop singer Demi Lovato musically opened the ski season in Ischgl on Saturday evening with the “Top of the Mountain Opening Concert”. With her all-female band, she served the 15,500 visitors brutal rock music, in which quiet nuances had little or no space. An evening in the snow that was convincing. With a “new Demi.”

With Lovato playing guitar himself, this rather rustic endeavor didn’t require much more than a second guitar, bass and drums. For this accompanying clarity of expression and her powerful singing, which adapted very well to the concept and the band and was able to stand up to them despite the enormous volume, there was a hail of “Demi, Demi, Demi” immediately following the opening song “Holy Fuck”. ” Shouts that came mainly from female mouths. Continuing with “Freak” and “Eat Me”, neither Lovato nor her band thought regarding reducing the volume, tempo or brutality. Instead, as the snow fell increasingly heavy, the audience was treated to solid rock hits, which in their composition might pass for a mixture of Black Sabbath riffing with Soundgarden influences mixed with a touch of punk rock.

The audience moved bravely and in some cases with lyrical confidence through these rather unusual and rough tones, which ended with the hit “Sorry Not Sorry”, but was also dressed in a more rocky dress. Only Lovato’s voice, which skilfully and virtuosically rose to lofty heights on this song, was reminiscent of the “pop demi” she might once have been. This was most likely present in the successful visuals, which used vertigo effects and modified crosses.

In view of the overall rock backdrop, Lovato overdid one or two vocal passages. In order to create pure presence, she sometimes resorted to less subtle singing techniques, which occasionally caused her voice to tip into a kind of exalted, expressive singing, in which not every note was really firmly in the saddle of the generally usual tonality. However, she was carefully forgiven for this slight tendency towards “wrongness”, as her unvarnished commitment was always noticeable, which might probably be interpreted as serious passion.

“29”, “City of Angels” and the indestructible “Heart Attack” turned out to be the highlights with a fairly mediocre sound mix, in which Lovato sounded almost the same as she did in 2013, when the global hit was first released. Here her band also seemed to act a little more differentiated and far-sighted: Instead of covering everything with hard rock, they cited the innocent punk attitude of the time, which flirted shamelessly with mainstream pop.

After two more encores, Lovato and her colleagues ended their almost 80-minute set. Further shouts for an encore went unheard, and a little later a DJ took the reins on the stage at the sports field in Ischgl and let the crowd continue dancing for a while with completely different sounds.

Thus, Lovato & Co. wrote themselves into the annals of Ischgl history with hard sounds. There was little evidence of the relative lack of words at the previous press conference in the followingnoon on stage. The stage was probably more their element than press conferences. In the latter case, she was very reserved regarding whether she would like to write down her memoirs soon – similar to her pop star colleague Britney Spears. She also identified herself as a passionate snowboarder with a positive attitude.
