5 little-known yet practical features of YouTube

Like just regarding everyone, you probably use YouTube, but do you know all of its functions? Here are five lesser-known aspects of YouTube.

Transcribe text from a video

There can be quite a few reasons why you need to read the text of a video. Whether you need to transcribe or prefer to read the text of a video essay at your leisure and at your own pace, you do not necessarily have to read the subtitles to access the video transcription .

To obtain the transcription, you must nevertheless watch your video on a PC. Next to the “Share” and “Download” buttons, you find a three-dot symbol indicating more options. Click on it, and you’ll find the option to view the transcript to the right of the video.

Share a YouTube link that opens directly to a specific moment in the video

Maybe you want to show a specific moment in a video to your friends, or maybe you want to find that specific moment once more in the future. There can be a whole bunch of reasons why you might want to use this feature which, while it’s actually quite visible, is often overlooked by its inconspicuousness.

Indeed, when you click on the “Share” button below a video, you can check the “Start at” option, which will allow us to obtain a new version of the URL, which starts at the desired time. Better: you can also select another moment, for example, a few seconds before the moment, to maintain some context.

Generally speaking, to open a video from a specific moment from a URL, you just need to add “&t=” accompanied by the number of seconds in the video at the end of it (pasted to the URL without any spaces).

There is yet a third method, in which you simply right-click as your mouse hovers over the video, then click “copy video URL from this clip”.

The option is unfortunately only available on computer.

Change video language

If this is not an option valid on all videos, this functionality which has been integrated for several months is starting to be seen more and more. YouTube allows creators to dub their video in several languages and integrate several audio tracks. You may have already encountered the case of a video in French from a YouTuber who apparently speaks English.

If you want to change the language of a video, if possible, you will find the possibility in the settings (the small gear) and click on the “audio track” option.

Note that it is still very rare to find multilingual YouTube videos, even if the very controversial YouTube giant, MrBeast, has converted to it. It must be said that paying a dubber or dubbing your video yourself into another language is not for everyone.

Watch YouTube in “restricted” mode

If this filter can have the air of censorship and prudishness, it must be recognized that it can prove useful. Especially if you want to watch a video without getting caught up in the comment area.

Restricted mode is in fact a YouTube mode which will have two main effects: delete comments and “filter” videos to remove subjects considered sensitive.

Unfortunately, this will potentially have the effect of depriving you of a certain number of videos that might have interested you, and risks giving a bit of a dull side to your YouTube experience. This is why we do not recommend leaving it always active. However, at times, it may have its interest.

To access it, it’s very simple. Click on your profile icon (on computer), and you will find in the list the option to activate restricted mode.

On a smartphone, you will find restricted mode in the “general settings”, inside the settings menu which you access by pressing your profile icon.

Share video clips

This is a feature that doesn’t always work, but can be nice. You have probably already seen the “clip” icon in the shape of scissors during your wanderings on YouTube (it is not always available, it depends on the videos).

Otherwise, you can find it, on your computer, in the three little dots next to the “download” button. Contrary to what you may think, this is not a premium feature, and it is free to use.

Click on the icon, choose your extract, its beginning and its end, give it a name, and that’s it! You can share a specific passage of a video with anyone. A functionality somewhat similar to that allowing you to share a URL that starts at a specific time, but with a little more flexibility and precision.
