Wild boars continue to cause problems in Wallonia. Too numerous, they are considered harmful animals and continue to bother many people in the region. This is once more the case this year. “We had a wild boar attack last Saturday”says for example Antoine Mabille, sheep breeder in Franc-Waret. “We had sheep that were scattered all over the village and the next morning we had 10 of them that were near the E42, ready to cause an accident.”he later regrets.
Winters, milder in recent years, allow wild boars to proliferate in our regions. The extension of this driven hunt was therefore recorded, with an extension of 7 weeks until February 20 to reduce their population. “This allows us to do two or three more hunts.” says for example Martin Cleda, the Director of the Department of Nature and Forests. “This might clearly increase the number of wild boar harvests”he clutches.
This is not the first time that the duration of the hunt has been extended with us. So, is this really the right solution? Some hunters doubt it. “How are we going to bring together so many hunters, trackers, touts and hunting assistants to carry out activities that are almost guaranteed to be successful? The idea is good, but it comes too late.”regrets Benoît Petit, President of the Royal Saint-Hubert Club of Belgium.
Wallonia therefore has other options on the table. First by facilitating night shooting, but also by prohibiting feeding during certain essential periods.
