President Mahmoud Abbas, very unpopular in the West Bank, faces growing discontent in the streets over the conflict ravaging Gaza. Abbas was the main architect of the 1993 Oslo peace process that was to lead to the creation of a Palestinian state and which has been stalled for more than ten years. The West Bank government continues to cling to a solution to the conflict through dialogue.

Since war broke out on October 7 following the Hamas attack, Abbas has kept a low profile. Many Palestinians, supporters of Hamas or people who are not supporters of this group, celebrated on social networks what they described as a “humiliating defeat” of Israel and have expressed their support for this movement.

On October 16, Abbas stated that “Hamas’ policies and actions do not represent the Palestinian people,” a statement published by the Palestinian Authority’s official agency that sparked outrage and was suppressed. The next day, hundreds of Palestinians protested in the streets of Ramallah shouting slogans such as “Abas out!” and were dispersed by force.

A poll published in September by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, before the war broke out, showed that 78% of Palestinians favored Abbas, 88, stepping down. Furthermore, 58% of those surveyed declared themselves in favor of armed struggle.
