A water pipe burst in Vienna-Ottakring on Saturday night and caused serious damage in the Flötzersteig – Anton-Geiger-Weg area and in Demuthgasse. A transport pipe with a diameter of 70 centimeters was affected, said a spokesman for the responsible municipal department 31 (Vienna water). On the one hand, this means that the drinking water supply for the surrounding population was not affected, but on the other hand, a lot of water escaped.
Wiener Wasser was informed of the burst water pipe at around 1 a.m. The professional fire department was also on duty because of the burst pipe and, among other things, had to pump out several cellars. “We were quite busy with several operations over the night,” said fire department spokesman Gerald Schimpf. The Wiener Linien coach house on Maroltingergasse was also affected. The operation of line 46 was stopped, lines 10 and 44 were shortened, as were bus lines 48A and 51A. The tram lines were already running as planned once more in the morning.
The intersection Flötzersteig – Anton-Geiger-Weg was most affected. The streets were closed. Other transport routes were also affected, and according to the spokesman for Wiener Wasser, there was rather – sometimes quite severe – contamination. “We have already involved our colleagues from road construction,” said the spokesman. It is impossible to estimate how much water has escaped. “But there must have been larger quantities when you see the damage.”
