Amid the fire that has ravaged OpenAI for the past week, it’s a spark that deserves a lot of attention. Its name: Q* (pronounced Q-Star or Q-star). Behind this code name lies a possible major advance towards artificial general intelligence (AGI). Capable of reasoning close to, or even similar to, that of humans, this technology is a holy grail for many laboratories and companies which have been pursuing it for years. This “super AI” might solve immensely complex problems. But also be a source of gigantic problems.
If Sam Altman was fired (and then quickly reinstated) from OpenAI, it may have been because his teams had made an important breakthrough. Several researchers have written a letter to the board warning of a powerful discovery in artificial intelligence (AI) that they say might threaten humanity, according to Archyde.com, which mentioned two sources. The site “The Information”, generally very well informed, published an identical revelation.
