A police car and an ambulance from the Social Medical Service collided in Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus on Friday evening. The police officer behind the wheel of the car was seriously injured and emergency services took him to hospital. Three occupants of the rescue vehicle were slightly injured and also taken to a hospital, police spokesman Mattias Schuster said in a broadcast on Saturday.
According to initial findings, clarifying the question of guilt may be difficult. Witness statements varied. The intersection is regulated with traffic lights. The police car is said to have driven on the left-turn lane on Felberstrasse towards Linzer Strasse and tried to cross the intersection with Schweglerstrasse in a straight direction. There was a collision with the ambulance, which entered the intersection from the left over the melting bridge.
Although this had yet to be officially confirmed, according to witnesses, both were driving with flashing lights. However, it was unclear whether they had also switched on the follow-up horns – as was the question of priority. For whom the traffic light was green or whether both were red remained initially unanswered.
