In recent weeks, we have seen an increase in the presence of respiratory viruses, also reflected in an increase in consultations in clinics and emergency rooms in the region.
The Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec Integrated University Health and Social Services Center (CIUSSS MCQ) is therefore launching its winter campaign in order to equip the population with the resources available to care for themselves at home and direct you to the right service when a consultation is required.
Tools to help parents
Although they are inconvenient, several viruses such as the flu, gastro or COVID-19 can be treated at home. “As a parent, we often ask ourselves questions regarding fever, cough, earache, the types of medications that can be given to our child or when we should see a doctor. Several tools have been developed in collaboration with doctors and pediatricians, specifically to support parents,” mentions Dr. Caroline Marcoux-Huard, doctor specializing in public health and preventive medicine at the CIUSSS MCQ.
Thanks to advice sheets and videos, they can refer to it in order to be able to make the right decisions to relieve their child and know in which situation they should consult a professional. These resources are available online at ciusssmcq.ca/vousetesmalade.
Consult in the right place: a reflex to develop
As winter marks an increase in consultations, it is important to remember that the emergency room must be used for an urgent health problem, that is to say one which puts the person’s life in danger or which requires immediate care. We see that many people’s first instinct is still to consult the emergency room for minor and non-urgent health problems, even though a variety of professionals can help them. The pharmacist or 811 responders are just a few examples of how to get good advice before going to the emergency room.
A tool listing the different entry points for a consultation has also been improved so that people can easily identify the best professional to support them if necessary. The Where to Consult tool is available at ciusssmcq.ca/ouconsulter.
Prevention is better than cure, especially in winter
Beyond the right actions to take when you are sick, several upstream actions are possible to limit the risks of transmission. Vaccination remains the best protection once morest certain respiratory viruses. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available with or without an appointment, and can be administered at the same time. “Simple actions like washing your hands frequently and coughing or sneezing into your elbow are also very effective in avoiding transmitting viruses. Ideally, when you are sick, you should avoid being around vulnerable people,” insists Dr. Marcoux-Huard.
