Al-Marsad newspaper: Genetic medicine consultant Zuhair Rahbini revealed the most common diseases caused by consanguineous marriage in the Kingdom.

Rahbini said during his interview on the Sayidaty program that recessive diseases are the most common in the Kingdom, given that the mother and father do not show any symptoms, as they are relatives, so the shared genes between them are greater, so the percentage of the newborn being affected is greater.

Recessive genetic diseases: For their appearance, a defect must be present in both genes, and their incidence increases if the spouses are from the same family (i.e. children of a cousin, aunt, maternal uncle, and aunt), due to the similarity of their genes that were passed from parents to children and then to grandchildren.

The most common of these diseases are:

– Sickle cell anemia

– Mediterranean anemia

– Spinal muscular atrophy (Werdnig-Hoffmann) disease

– Metabolic diseases

– Recessive hereditary deafness (representing 70 percent of hereditary causes of deafness).
