General Motors, the multinational that owns Chevrolet and other automakers, denied rumors that pointed to the possibility of the company following the same path as its competitor Ford and leaving Brazil. The rumors arose when the company announced mass layoffs at the factories in São José dos Campos, São Caetano do Sul and Mogi das Cruzes.
The cuts, however, were canceled by GM following a decision by the Superior Labor Court (TST) rejected the North American company’s request for an injunction for the layoffs to be maintained. Furthermore, the automaker’s difficulties in China also raised a warning sign for the possibility of executives retreating in some markets, including Brazil.
The vice president of communication and government relations at GM do Brasil, Fábio Rua, denied the rumors that pointed to the company’s exit from the national market during the AutoData Perspectives 2024 Congress. In a firm and summarized speech, the representative stated that “the GM will not leave Brazil” also revealing a new investment cycle.
According to Rua, next year the company will “reinforce its commitment to the future and decarbonization” pointing to the possibility of new contributions in the hybrid vehicle segment, something previously ruled out by GM leadership. At the time, the spokesperson gave brief indications regarding the plans, issuing the following statement:
“We are committed to the future and to decarbonization. New technologies over time may emerge and show that they are as efficient or more efficient than combustion cars. We cannot deny the possibility, from now on, that we will have the fuel cell, hybrid. I don’t know what the future holds for us, not only in terms of innovation but also in terms of scale and competitiveness.”
Rua also took the opportunity to justify that no one is sure regarding the future, so it is not possible to predict exactly what the market will be like in the coming years or decades.
“Our goal is electric power for 2035. New technologies may emerge over time. And they can show that they are as efficient or more efficient than combustion cars. We cannot deny the possibility, from now on, [termos carro] the fuel cell, hybrid… I don’t know what the future holds for us, not only in terms of innovation but also in terms of scale and competitiveness.”
