Beci believes that too many files currently managed by the Brussels government are problematic for businesses in the capital.
The independent organization Beci (Brussels Enterprises Commerce and Industry), which represents companies established in the capital, launched an urgent invitation on Thursday for an employers’ consultation on the situation in the Brussels Region. The meeting supposed to bring together representatives of the different sectors is due to take place this Monday, November 27.
In the invitation, it is mentioned that this initiative follows the latest report from the Court of Auditors on Brussels finances. And the fact that too many files managed by the Region are problematic for businesses. On the daily menu are therefore regional financesthe continuation of deployment of the Good Move regional mobility planregional taxes and property tax which, as a reminder, increased in many municipalities last year.
Export aid for businesses which will be subject to a freeze next year are also on the agenda. As the energy market et the Cobrace (Brussels Air, Climate and Energy Code). In its budget agreement, the Brussels executive indeed mentions a review of the mechanisms relating to off-street parking which should lead to better revenues in 2024.
Regional bankruptcy?
This would be the first time that Beci has launched such an emergency consultation. A few days ago, this organization had already issued a press release in which it said it was concerned of a possible bankruptcy of the Region. “With a debt of 11.4 billion at the end of 2022 and revenues 1.4 billion lower than expenditure in the middle of an election year, the risk of deterioration in the rating of international agencies will be clear.”
And to call for a radical change of direction in this city-region living well beyond its means. “Expenditures are clearly not under control, efforts within each department are insufficient”indicated the managing director of Beci, Olivier Willocx, who denounces the existing contradictions between the desire, on the one hand, to develop a city marketing policy worthy of the name while, on the other hand, cutting budgets for export promotion.
Concerning real estate revenues at half mast, Olivier Willocx declares that the sector is on the ground with the explosion of interest rates and environmental standards. Without forgetting the eternal debate around mobility. “A12, Louise, Schuman: we would like to kill entrepreneurship and work that we would not do otherwise!”
