Taking Action for Safety: Mons Students Build Wall to Secure Pedestrian Tunnel Intersection

Faced with the insecurity that has reigned for several years in the Nimy pedestrian tunnel, which connects the city center of Mons to the Champ de Mars campus, Mons students decided to take action on Friday and built a wall which now obstructs an intersection leading to one of the two exits. The goal is to bring safety back to this tunnel passage.

The problem of insecurity is not new“, explains Malik Dhanani, vice-president of the Student Representative Organization (ORE). “When going through the tunnel, it is impossible to see if anyone is hidden in the intersection leading to an exit via stairs. This is where people get attacked. Again this summer, a young woman was attacked in broad daylight. We decided to wall this place off. It is therefore now impossible to hide there because the tunnel, straight ahead, leads to the other exit. This action and the symbolism that results from it aim to send a strong message to the Walloon Region.“.

The phenomenon has been denounced on several occasions by Mons students. “For five years now, we have been alerting the academic authorities, the City of Mons and the Walloon Region. The lack of will of the latter, even though it is truly responsible for the project, despairs us, while the City and the academic authorities quickly became aware of the problem and defended our position.“, deplores the ERO representative.
