MANKATO, Minn. — #12 Minnesota State surpassed the 100-point plateau for the second game in a row as the Mavericks bested Waldorf by the score of 113-55 in Taylor Center.
With the win, MSU improves to 5-0 on the season. The game will count as an exhibition for Waldorf.
“I thought we came out strong in the first 10 minutes of the first half and then go a little lackadaisical following that but we closed out the half well,” head coach Matt Margenthaler said. “We came out in the second half and did what we were supposed to do. I like how this team is really connecting.”
Minnesota State started hot, hitting its first four shots, taking an early 10-0 lead. Kyreese Willingham had seven points in a 13-6 run to extend the Maverick lead to 23-6. Waldorf would cut into MSU’s lead, going on a 20-11 run of their own that brought the Maverick lead to single-digits, at 34-26. T
The Mavericks would then go on a 22-9 run to close out the half with a 56-33 lead. Dylan Peeters and Justin Eagins each scored six points in that run, while Malik Willingham and Elijah Hazekamp each scored five.
Kyreese Willingham led all scorers in the first half with 12 points. His brother, Malik, had nine points, three assists and five rebounds through the first 20 minutes. Hazekamp, Eagins and Peeters each had eight first-half points.
Minnesota State shot 50% from the field in the first half, including 6-of-14 from three. The Mavericks had 18 second chance points in the first half on 10 offensive rebounds. Minnesota outrebounded the Warriors 27-16 in the first half.
Waldorf was led by Khyle Washingtonwho had 10 points and two rebounds in the first half. The Warriors shot 35.5% from the field and 4-of-12 from three-point range.
The Mavericks would not look back in the second half as they outscored the Warriors 57-22 through the final 20 minutes, en route to the 113-55 win.
Peeters and Malik Willingham led the Maverick offense with 15 points each, with Peeters hauling in eight rebounds. Willingham also posted five rebounds and five assists. Hazekamp added 13 points and five rebounds also, while Kyreese Willingham notched 12 points. Eagins added 10 points as well. Malcom Jones hauled in a team-leading nine rebounds as well.
As a unit, MSU shot 47.6% from the field, including an 11-of-29 (.379) showing from downtown. The Mavericks also cashed in on 24-of-26 (.923) attempts from the free throw line. MSU also enjoyed a 63-31 advantage in rebounds as the Mavericks hauled in 24 offensive boards and scored 36 second-chance points.
Washington led the Warriors with 12 points, while Kaelon Harkema tallied nine points. As a team, Waldorf shot 28.4% from the field, including a 7-of-28 (.250) showing from three point range.
Minnesota State concludes its weekend at home the Saturday as the Mavericks host Bethany Lutheran College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., at Taylor Center.
