Caracas, Nov 24 (EFE).- The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, assured this Friday that all sectors of the country are in “national union” to achieve the recovery of Essequibo, a territory of almost 160,000 square kilometers that his nation dispute with Guyana since colonial times.

“We are in national unity for the recovery of Guyana Esequiba, to stop the abuses of ExxonMobil, to stop the abuses of the president of Guyana, puppet of ExxonMobil, provocative puppet (…) we are in permanent battle,” said the president during the inauguration of a work in the coastal state of La Guaira.

In his speech, broadcast on the state channel VTV, Maduro reiterated that no country “can blackmail” Venezuela, and that the Caribbean nation will continue to defend its territory.

Earlier, in a telephone contact held with participants in a meeting in favor of the non-binding referendum on December 3 on the territorial dispute, the head of state insisted that this public consultation, rejected by Guyana, represents “the greatest act of peace ” of his nation.

“I am very happy to see that Venezuela is reborn and flourishes in its national union. They took advantage of the division of the 19th century, that we did not have a State, that we did not have military force. They took advantage of the 20th century as well. But the 21st century is very different, we are united, we have conscience, military force, State and people,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, he asked Venezuelans to “invoke peace for Venezuela” and to vote in this referendum “united as a family.”

Earlier, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López said that the dispute with Guyana “is not an armed war, for now,” and called on Venezuelans to vote in the December 3 electoral event.

“Go out and vote (in the referendum). This is not an armed war, for now, it is not an armed war,” said the minister, who assured that the members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) will be “permanently vigilant.” of “any action that threatens” “territorial integrity.”

Meanwhile, Guyanese Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said this Thursday that representatives of the US Department of Defense will visit Guyana next week, as part of the cooperation that Georgetown is exploring with its allies in order to prepare for any eventuality in the dispute. with Venezuela, whose referendum he rejects.
