The dengue epidemic continues to spread in Guyana. In its epidemiological update of November 23, Santé Publique France announced the resumption of the circulation of the virus, particularly in the areas of the west coast and on the island of Cayenne.
1,948 confirmed cases of dengue fever were recorded in Guyana since the beginning of the year. According to Santé Publique France, “the circulation of the virus has resumed in the Littoral West and Ile de Cayenne sectors” over the last two weeks.
It is on the island of Cayenne that there are the most (39% of cases), then on the west coast (32% of cases), followed by the savannah territory (20% of cases). On the Maroni, the epidemic focus in the town of Grand-Santi remains active.
The number of visits to emergency rooms is also increasingthis mainly concerns the Western Guiana Hospital Center (with 51% of visits for cases of dengue).
A few cases have also been confirmed in Apatou (4) and Saint-Georges de l’Oyapock (2) in the last two weeks. The increase was expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks, announces Public Health France. On the other hand, in the savannah territory, the trend is slightly decreasing.
The health organization calls for strengthening of protective measures as the season approaches rains. This period is favorable for the multiplication of the aedes aegypti mosquito, vector of dengue fever.
