A Belgian family thought they had bought their dream house in Schelle, in the province of Antwerp. But this dream quickly turned into a nightmare. For a year and a half, nights began to be disturbed by a very strange noise. It was the children who first alerted their parents to the strange sounds, probably animal-related, emanating from the ceiling.
Yelle, the mother, was not too worried, thinking that it was simple rodents that had found refuge in their house. But quickly, she realized that the animal was actually a marten. This brown-furred animal that can be confused with a marten usually finds its habitat in the forest.

The beast’s urine even pierced the ceiling
The beginning of the ordeal. The couple encountered all possible difficulties to get rid of the animal. They first tried to redo their roof, which didn’t work and resulted in a lot of costs. “Feeding for all ventilation grilles, clamps with stakes on the downpipes, the installation of ultrasound, the purchase of a marten cage, an animal camera, ammonia cloths and toilet cubes because they can’t stand the smell, we really tried everything” assures Yelle to the Gazette of Antwerp.

The nuisances started once more, every night before dawn. The animal’s urine even penetrated the ceiling and gave off a pestilential odor, the couple claims. As a last resort, they called the firefighters but they told them that they might not inject poison because the animal was on the list of protected species. No action from the municipality either, which responded that humans and animals should be able to live together. The couple therefore launches a final appeal in despair to find a technique and get rid of this animal which is ruining their daily lives… Without success for the moment.
