Brussels Government Limits Emergency Vehicle Sirens from 2025 – Protecting Residents’ Quality of Life

The Brussels government decided on Thursday to limit the volume of sirens on new emergency vehicles from January 2025.

These will no longer be able to exceed 100 decibels, although there is currently no sound limit. At night, this level will even be lowered to 90 decibels in order to preserve the sleep of Brussels residents, according to a press release from Brussels Minister Alain Maron (Ecolo).

The Brussels government approved a decree to this effect on final reading on Thursday. According to opinion studies, emergency vehicle sirens are in the top 3 noise nuisances that most disturb Brussels residents, along with traffic noise and aircraft noise.

More than 2,000 vehicles (excluding the private sector) are now equipped with sound warning devices and are circulating in the Brussels Region. However, noise has serious effects on health, particularly on hearing and the quality of sleep, recalls Mr. Maron.

By reducing noise in the city, we also protect the hearing system of Brussels residents, and we reduce their level of stress and anxiety. In short, we protect their physical and mental health, and we improve their quality of life.“.
