Sex worker can open a business account more easily without ‘difficult questions’ | Economy

From now on, sex workers can more easily open a business account. To do this, they must show a printout of their tax or VAT return.

It was difficult for sex workers to open a business bank account because their customers often paid in cash. The bank has the task of controlling money flows from entrepreneurs. But banks found it difficult to find out exactly where sex workers’ cash came from.

That is why agreements have now been made with the banks that sex workers can show their tax or VAT returns when opening a business account. In addition, the bank may request detailed accounting and registration with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK).

This should prevent reliable customers from being asked “difficult questions”, writes the Dutch Banking Association (NVB). “If banks suspect money laundering, they have to know a lot regarding the customer,” says a spokesperson. Sex workers, for example, may be asked questions regarding how they earn their money and where the money comes from.

“I am happy that we are making arranging banking matters easier for sex workers,” says Helène Erftemeijer, anti-money laundering sector coordinator at the NVB. “You can’t do business without a bank account.”
