The Japanese company is targeted for “abuse of a dominant position” which allowed it to impose unfair prices on Playstation consumers. This complaint was put aside by a collective of British consumers in 2022
This Tuesday, November 21, 2023, British justice formalized the complaint and therefore a procedure is underway.
Alex Neill, at the initiative of this consumer collective, declared that Sony had abused its dominant position by requiring that dematerialized games and extensions be sold only through the Playstation Store, which charges a 30% commission to developers and editors, indicates our colleagues.
Consumers compensated from 75 to 650 euros
“This is the first step in getting consumers back what they are owed because Sony broke the law,” he added, reports West France.
If the complaint continues and the judges find Sony guilty, the company might reimburse each consumer, having purchased at least one game or an expansion between August 19, 2016 and August 19, 2022, from 75 to 650 euros.
For the international firm, this compensation will represent nearly 7.2 billion euros.
