President Gustavo Petro traveled to Ecuador to inaugurate Daniel Noboa, who was elected on October 16 to serve a shorter term than usual that will last just a year and a half, following the National Assembly was dissolved.
He was the only Latin American leader who attended the event, since the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, canceled his trip at the last minute. Thus, Petro had the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with Noboa, which he began around noon at the Carondelet Palace.
Moments before the meeting, in conversation with the Ecuadorian media, the president assured that his objective is to present to Noboa the idea “of a unified and joint plan for the entire region to stop the perverse effects of droughts on the population.”
What the president has insisted on, not only in this but in other scenarios, is the effect of climate change on the world and particularly in Latin America.
According to him, “the climate crisis is hitting Ecuador first, now Colombia, Venezuela and Panama are coming,” so “if we do not come together to cushion the damage of this climate blow, we will suffer it much more.”
The Presidency also noted that the two leaders are also expected to address border, immigration, security and defense, infrastructure and connectivity, and trade issues.
The country is already helping Ecuador, because following a visit by Guillermo Lasso to the Casa de Nariño it was agreed that Colombia will provide energy from the thermal system during this end of the year to mitigate the crisis that has triggered blackouts.
