Genetic Predisposition to Insomnia in Children: Study Shows Connection to Adult Sleep Habits

When the children were 1½, 3, 6, and 10 to 15 years old, their mothers shared details regarding their sleep health—such as whether they had trouble falling asleep, slept less than most children, or woke up often throughout the night. The authors found that a genetic predisposition to developing insomnia in children was associated with insomnia-like symptoms reported by their mothers. “Our study shows that the genetic susceptibility to poor sleep is transferable from adults to children,” said author Desana Kocevska from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience.
