Amsterdam: Far-right, anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) has won the general election in the Netherlands.
PVV is far ahead of its rival Left Front. Political observers consider the election result to be the saddest news in Dutch politics since the Second World War.
When all the votes were counted, Geert Wilders’ PVV won 37 of the 150 seats in parliament. PVV won only 17 seats in the last election.
Wilders is one of the main proponents of making the Netherlands free of Islam. He previously said that the Netherlands is not an Islamic country and does not allow mosques and Islamic schools.
There are reports that PVV’s victory has created great anxiety among the country’s Muslim population.
Wilders also promised to end immigration to the Netherlands. Immigration was a major issue in his election campaign.
In 2016, Wilders was sued for making offensive remarks once morest Moroccans.
Wilders, known as the Dutch version of US President Donald Trump, needs to form a coalition government if he is to win power. But this is expected to be difficult as mainstream parties are reluctant to join him in numbers.
