Alisa Buchinger from the Nonntal district of Salzburg was once a karate world champion. She is now taking part in a project in India that aims to give young women and girls more self-confidence in society.

In the beginning, Sonne-International offered regular self-defense courses for around 100 young girls at several schools in India. The trigger for this project was a gang rape in 2012. Now this project has been expanded to other states in India. The aim was and is to preventively prepare girls from the lowest Indian caste for violent attacks. The weekly self-defense courses are led by professional Indian karate instructors.

Buchinger has been there since 2015

Alisa Buchinger from Nonntal has been a project sponsor since 2015 and has already been to India twice to train the girls on site. She is also enthusiastic regarding the project. “I would like to give something back from what I have learned over many years in this sport. I can do this perfectly in India,” says the former karate world champion. Last week, Buchinger traveled to India once more together with the Sonne-International project manager, Armin Mösinger, to train over a hundred girls and young women in self-defense and to give them self-confidence.

“Alisa is a great role model”

As part of a large sports festival on November 17th, the project was presented to the surrounding villagers to raise awareness of equality in Indian society. On the occasion of the “16 Days Against Violence Against Women” campaign, this Austrian non-governmental organization would like to draw attention to the problem in this area. Project manager Armin Mössinger is enthusiastic regarding Buchinger’s help. “Alisa shows the girls that women are very strong. She is a great role model and that motivates the girls to train even more,” he says.

Organization raises money for further projects

The organization is currently raising money to continue financing the project in the future. A crowdfunding campaign was launched for this purpose. The first goal of 12,000 euros has already been reached. Anyone who wants to take part in the campaign can do so via the respekt.net website.
