The residents of Grivegnée, in Liège, are opposed to the creation of a detention center in their neighborhood. 250 people attended an information evening on this project this Tuesday. A tense meeting lasting more than two hours.
The new Minister of Justice Paul Van Tigchelt came in person to defend the idea, but he did not convince many people.
There are schools nearby. It scares us
In the room, emotion is strong, and opposition to the project is fierce. From the outset, local residents questioned the minister’s team. In particular, they fear that their house will lose value. But not only. “We are all outraged” intervenes a local resident. “There are schools nearby. It scares us. What recourse do we have to oppose your project” she asks herself.
The Minister of Justice, Paul Van Tigchelt, struggles to defend the concept of the detention center in an urban environment : “We now already have detention centers in Kortrijk, Forest and Antwerp with short sentences. And why are we doing this? Because it is the way to treat people in a more humane way to avoid recidivism”.
