Tragic House Fire in Huy: Mayor’s Insights and Community Impact

As far as he can remember, Christophe Collignon, mayor of Huy, has never experienced such a tragedy. However, he has already faced many difficult events during his political career. The mayor was there this Wednesday to witness the arrival of the hearses along with the late mayor Éric Dosogne and alderman Adrien Housiaux. “I did my best to be present. Whether we are elected or not, we are human beings. It was important to be there because this event affects us all.” Christophe Collignon said he was also marked this Wednesday morning by this tragedy which affects “an entire family and four relatively young children. It’s extremely shocking, it’s a real human drama. I have no words . This tragedy affects the city and its community. It is in such a tragedy that we see where the essential is…” And there, the City did its best to regulate things.

Without passing judgment on the fire, on its origin, the Hutois, with his minister’s cap, can only draw attention to the benefit of having smoke detectors at home. We know, the house didn’t have one. Would that have changed things? Nothing says it, no one knows it. But nonetheless… “Was this type of accident avoidable or not?”, asks the mayor. The fact that there were no fire detectors still raises questions because “they are there, the detectors, for something. The legislation provides for them” but we would have to see how we impose it, how we sees that they are well placed.

Another point noted by the mayor: the house was old. And such a problem is even more serious when the building is old. “That doesn’t help, even if I don’t want to pass judgment. Because there is fate too.” But clearly, the older the building, the more risk there is. Moreover, following the collapse of the buildings on Rue Neuve, Christophe Collignon stepped up visits to buildings and housing in order to check their state of dilapidation. Because clearly, an old building “doesn’t make things easier…”
