Long a model student in keeping its accounts, the Confederation finds itself struggling. The turning point first occurred with the Covid-19 pandemic, and its sudden expenditure of some 30 billion francs. Then the war between Russia and Ukraine followed, weighing on federal finances. Welcoming some 66,000 Ukrainians entails significant costs, as well as the increase in the military budget, decided by parliament precisely in reaction to the imperialist desires of Moscow. Added to these two elements are aid to pay for health premiums that are constantly increasing, and AVS pensions on an upward curve due to the aging of the population.
