A 37-year-old woman, prosecuted for “apology of terrorism” following an online video in which she joked regarding the death of an Israeli baby in connection with the Hamas attack, defended herself in court on Wednesday of any desire to provoke, recognizing only an “awkwardness”.

In a video published in early November on his Instagram account, Warda A. commented on information reported by an Israeli rescuer, according to which a baby had been placed in an oven by Hamas members during the October 7 attack on the ground Israeli. This account has not been confirmed by Israeli authorities.
“Every time I come across the story of the baby who was put in the oven, I wonder if they put salt, pepper (…), thyme? If they made him come back to what?” the young woman said in her video.
Comments which earned him to appear on Wednesday before the Paris criminal court for “apology of an act of terrorism”, in a sometimes tense atmosphere, in the presence of a large audience and in front of numerous civil parties, including Licra , SOS Racisme and the Jewish Observatory of France.
Refuting any intention of “provocation”, the thirty-year-old explained that she did not believe that a baby might have been placed in an oven – “For me it does not exist, it is not possible that we might do such an atrocity »-, and that she had only wanted to denounce “propaganda” and “media manipulation”.
“It was misinterpreted, I was clumsy, but I did not intend to harm anyone,” said Ms. A., who said she did not recognize herself in the term. “influencer” used by many media regarding her.
As the president of the court asked her if she regretted her videos, the defendant replied, following a very long hesitation: “I rather regret that we did not have the intelligence to see and read them as I wanted to do convey the message”.
The defendant refused to qualify Hamas as a “terrorist” movement, while admitting that the October 7 attack was.
“Terrorism is what we experienced in France, the Bataclan… it’s killing people without distinction, for an ideology. I did not advocate this kind of thing and I never will,” said the thirty-year-old, who then refused to answer all the questions from the civil parties.
The prosecution’s requisitions were expected in the evening.
