Putin said at a virtual G20 summit that some participants were shocked by Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine. He emphasized that we need to think regarding how this “tragedy” can be ended. Putin also used the word “war” in his remarks and not – as usual – the term “special military operation”. The Russian President emphasized that his country had never rejected peace talks with Ukraine.
Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022 and still occupies around a fifth of Ukrainian territory. To date, Ukraine has always made the withdrawal of Russian troops a condition for negotiations.
