Sam Altman only had to leave his post as director for four days. Early Wednesday morning (i.e. Tuesday evening in California), OpenAI announced that the manager was back, following he had been fired on Friday by the board of directors of the publisher of ChatGPT. This is a huge success for Sam Altman, which is accompanied by a major change in governance for the company specializing in artificial intelligence.
While Satya Nadella, director of Microsoft, announced Sunday evening (California time) the transfer of Sam Altman within his multinational, the latter ultimately remains active within the start-up. “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has served to keep this team and its mission together. When I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that this was the best path for me and the team. With the new board of directors and the support of Satya, I look forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft,” Sam Altman just wrote on X.

Supported by more than 500 OpenAI employees out of 770 who had signed an open letter supporting him, Sam Altman also obtained the return of former chairman of the board Greg Brockman. The latter had resigned following the dismissal of Sam Altman and was also due to join Microsoft. He thus remains at the head of OpenAI.
The start-up’s board of directors will also be significantly modified. This will be made up of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo (the latter having approved the dismissal of Sam Altman). According to the specialized site The Verge, the only job of this new provisional council will be to appoint a new council composed of a maximum of nine people which will significantly modify the governance of OpenAI. Microsoft will likely have a seat on this expanded board, as will Sam Altman, according to The Verge.
