MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State women’s basketball (2-4) fell to the No. 25 Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth (2-1) in the Mavericks’ home opener Tuesday night by the score of 75-64. Minnesota Duluth was led by Taytum Rhoadeswho ended with 22 points, six rebounds and three blocks. In her first game of the 2023-24 season, reigning two-time NSIC Defensive Player of the Year, Joey Battfinished with 19 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal for the Mavericks. The Bulldogs’ win over Minnesota State marks the team’s seventh-straight victory over the Mavericks. Minnesota State has now lost three-straight games.
The first quarter was a defensive battle, as through the first 10 minutes the Mavericks were up 14-12. Emily Russo had four points, two rebounds and three steals. Emily Herzberg had two points and five rebounds.
Quarter two started similarly to the first, as a Natalie Bremer jumper extended the Maverick lead, putting Minnesota State up 24-17. In the last three and a half minutes, the Bulldogs went on a 14-7 run to knot up the score at 31-31 heading into halftime. Destinee Bursch had nine points in the second quarter, including a three-pointer to put the Mavericks up 29-22. Rhoades’ and Myra Moorjani each scored three points in the last minute and 30 seconds to tie the game going into half, 31-31.
At the half, Bursch led Minnesota State in scoring with 11 points on 4-6 shooting. Herzberg had five points and five rebounds. Batt had four points, three assists and a steal. The Mavericks shot 34.2% from the field in the first half, shooting 1-7 from three and 4-5 from the free throw line. Minnesota State out-rebounded the Bulldogs 20-17 in the first half, racking up 11 offensive rebounds.
Rhoades finished the first half with 16 points on 4-5 shooting, four rebounds and two blocks. She made all seven of her free throw attempts in the first two quarters. Moorjani ended the half with seven points. Minnesota Duluth shot 52.9% from the field in the first half, 3-6 from beyond the arc and 10-16 from the line.
The second half started just as contested as the first, as through the first six minutes of the third quarter the score was still tied at 41-a-piece. Minnesota Duluth ended the third quarter on a 14-6 run, led by Lexi Karge who had four points in that stretch, which put the Bulldogs on top following three quarters, 55-47. The Bulldogs shot 58.3% in the third quarter and shot 2-4 from the three-point line. Minnesota State shot 6-16 (37.5%) in the third, not making a three-pointer in the quarter.
A Bursch layup and two Batt free throws brought the Mavericks within two just regarding halfway through the final period. But Minnesota Duluth had other plans, as the Bulldogs finished the game with a dominant 16-7 run, shooting 7-8 in the final five and a half minutes as Minnesota State only shot 3-10 from the floor. Thank you Hakamaki had five points on that run to close out the Mavericks, 75-64.
Minnesota State shot 36% from the field and made just 2-14 from three-point range. The Mavericks shot 10-12 from the free throw line. The Mavericks were outrebounded 37-33, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds and scoring 16 second chance points. Minnesota State also forced 31 turnovers and had 17 steals.
Batt was the leading scorer and passer for the Mavericks in her first game of the season. She had 19 points on 7-15 shooting, three rebounds four assists and a steal. Bursch had 17 points of her own (6-14 FG), along with four rebounds and a steal. Herzberg led the team in rebounds with six and had seven points. Bremer had six points and four steals.
The Bulldogs ended with a 58.5% field goal percentage and made half of their three-point attempts. The Bulldogs also shot 31 free throws once morest the Mavericks, making 21 of them. Minnesota Duluth also blocked 10 shots as at team. Rhoades led all scorers with 22 points (6-10 FG, 9-9 FT). She also had six rebounds and three blocks. Hakamaki had 18 points (5-9 FG, 7-7 FT), 10 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal. Moorjani ended with 10 points off the bench and dished out four assists.
Minnesota State returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. as the Mavericks play host to the Rangers of UW-Parkside (1-2). The Mavericks have never lost once morest Parkside, winning all eight games, including a victory last season, 80-71.
