AK Upper Austria President Andreas Stangl reacted critically to the current debate regarding raising the starting age: “The attacks on the pension system are massive. It is still certain that we have to build and strengthen trust.”

He referred to the development of the number of employees in Upper Austria and thus the number of contributors to pensions: “In the last five years alone, 50,000 employees have been added to our state.” He also pointed out the striking differences in financing: “Employees pay almost 90 percent of their pensions themselves, while employers only pay around 67 percent.”

The current inflation is a big challenge: “We have been running for nine months to get the regulation for 2024 and 2025 in place. In view of inflation, it is important that pensioners receive the first increase in full and not just a part or nothing at all. We We would like this regulation to be permanent.”

Part-time must also be part of the debate: “It is often criticized that women work part-time. A survey showed that 30 percent of women working part-time would like to work more hours – but do not receive a corresponding offer from their employer.” In order to actually reduce the part-time rate, a large-scale expansion of childcare options in the country is urgently needed.
