Système U defends the reform of meal vouchers

The meal voucher system has received a lot of attention in recent weeks. This Monday, November 20, 2023, Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Système U, affirmed his support for the expanded use of restaurant vouchers for food shopping. According to him, this measure is even “ indispensable » for the French who benefit from it. The CEO of Système U supported his remarks by emphasizing that these titles, initially intended for restaurant meals, are today considered by many as “ meal tickets », thus supporting the reform envisaged by the government for this system.

Dominique Schelcher highlighted the evolution of the eating habits of the French following the health crisis and the development of teleworking: “ When you are teleworking (…) and your employer pays you something for the meal, you do not go to the restaurant, you buy things to prepare your meal at home “, he explains. The CEO of Système U also insisted on the need not to limit employees to “ buy processed products » for their lunch break, advocating a healthier diet prepared at home.

Restaurant vouchers: the concerns of restaurateurs

The words of the CEO of Système U echo those of Thierry Marx, emblematic figure of French gastronomy and president of Umih. The government’s U-turn on meal vouchers has sparked concerns in the restaurant sector, despite initial government support. To ease tensions, the Prime Minister received the star chef in her office on Friday November 16. Thierry Marx was thus able to defend the interests of catering by highlighting the shortfall of more than 200 million euros for the sector in 2023.

To avoid penalizing French people benefiting from meal vouchers and the catering sector, Thierry Marx proposed a solution: create a food voucher or food check for the purchase of food products in supermarkets, separate from the current meal voucher, reserved for meals in catering establishments. The objective is to balance the interests of consumers, restaurateurs and the agri-food sector. According to Umih data, restaurants saw their market share decline by 3%, while supermarkets saw a significant increase of over 6%.
