Not many people remember the name of the Agent game that Rockstar announced in 2009, the spy and intelligence game that was going to be released exclusively on the PlayStation 3 platform, but following regarding a year the development process stopped and that project did not see the light. Now we have more information regarding that unfinished project, thanks to the blog of former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeji. Agent was supposed to be a James Bond-style stealth and action game, and was going to be a much more linear game than GTA, with separate locations designed for missions. The game’s events would take place during the Cold War, in the seventies, where we would visit different places, most notably Cairo and a French city, and there would also be an action mission set in space. Obbe says that the development team was very excited regarding this new title, and that he was looking for a change in atmosphere away from the GTA series. He said: “After San Andreas, we very much wanted to do something different from GTA. We were excited and passionate regarding developing Agent. I remember to this day working “On a chase mission on an icy slope, there was gunfire and an exciting atmosphere.” At that time, Rockstar was working on GTA 4, so the Rockstar North studio team was divided into two halves, one of which worked on the latest versions of GTA and the other worked on Agent. Rockstar believed in the project and trusted Agent. Unfortunately, the development process did not last long, and it seems that even Rockstar may face obstacles in the development process. In the words of Mr. Obbe: “The game continued to be developed and worked on for a year, but the development team did not reach the result that it planned in that period of time, and it was inevitable that All studios are dedicated to working on GTA 4 at that time.” So work on Agent was halted as a distraction, and handed over to another team at Rockstar, but later the project was canceled altogether and the title was deleted from the official Rockstar website. It would have been nice to see a Rockstar-developed spy game that strayed away from the open-world formula, as it would have been in the 1970s. Rockstar is currently preparing for the first reveal of the next version of the GTA series, which will be in early December.
