A copy of the book “Famous Composers vol. 2″ was returned to the Saint Paul Public Library in Minnesota following more than a century of being loaned. The city’s library director, Maureen Hartman, said in an interview with CNN that the 1902 edition of Nathan Haskell Dole’s book was found by a user in Hennepin County while going through his mother’s belongings.

The literary piece had spent little time on the shelves of the Saint Paul Library, as revealed by the analysis of the loan stamps and registration card published by the news network. The work appears registered on two occasions, with stamps from the years 1914 and 1916, in the history of the library catalogue, once before and once following the devastating fire that in 1915 destroyed the entire Old Market Library, prior to the inauguration of the Central Library building in 1917.

The book, in a fragile but intact state, will not return to circulation and might be exhibited in the Saint Paul Collection, which documents part of the city’s history, The Guardian newspaper reported. Despite the years, the copy retains its original binding and shows signs of use and annotations that document its extensive history.

Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter joked regarding the fine the book would have accrued, although it would not actually be levied since the library waived late fees in 2019. If the fee at the time had been applied, one cent per day, today it would translate to a penalty of around USD 380.

The coordinator of the Saint Paul digital library, John Larson, in statements to Minnesota Public Radio, highlighted the unusual nature of the event and noted that the copy will become an artifact more than a book given its historical relevance, housing library marks and annotations . He also encouraged those who have overdue books from five, ten or twenty years ago to return them to the library. “All is forgiven,” he assured.

Among the curiosities found in the book are handwritten annotations, including a mathematical equation solved on one of the cards: the calculation of the difference between the years 1928 and 1791, > published.

“This has been a wonderful opportunity to talk regarding this specific book,” Hartman told CNN, “but also regarding libraries and the value of libraries in general. “This has shown us once once more that these sites are as interesting and loved now as they were 100 years ago.”
