The number of new electric cars has exceeded that of vehicles equipped with diesel engines in Europe, a first, according to the Association of European Manufacturers (Acea). Between January and October, 1.23 million completely electric vehicles were registered within the European Union, compared to 1.22 million running on diesel. Electric vehicles represented a market share of 14.2% in October compared to 12% for diesel. Gasoline vehicles still account for a third of the market while electric hybrids represent 28.6%.
The automobile market experienced its fifteenth consecutive month of growth. In total, 855,484 new cars were registered, an increase of 14.6% compared to the same month of 2022. Double-digit growth was observed in three of the largest markets on the Old Continent: France (+21.9%) , Italy (+20%) and Spain (+18.1%). In Belgium, the market saw a 26.6% jump in registrations.
Registrations of electric vehicles in Europe increased by more than 36% in October, to 121,808 units. The biggest increases were observed in Belgium (+147.3%) and Denmark (+100.7%).
