Since Sunday in Algiers, the Pasteur Institute of Algeria (IPA) has hosted regional training in bioinformatics intended to improve the interpretation of poliovirus diagnostic data.

The training, which is held at the Sidi Fredj IPA annex, is organized in collaboration with the Africa office of the World Health Organization (WHO) and aims to “develop improved diagnostic tools for poliovirus” , the head of the IPA enterovirus laboratory, Dr Dahbia Anes-Boulahbal, told the press.

This 5-day workshop is part of the global polio eradication initiative with the aim of strengthening the capacities of laboratories in participating African countries for the interpretation of data from the polio technique. sequencing, using bioinformatics,” she added.

In this regard, she indicated that the WHO’s ambition is to “shorten the time needed to diagnose poliovirus, so as to have more rapid response tools and stop the disease on a global scale”. “The last case of indigenous wild poliomyelitis in Algeria dates back to 1996. However, we always remain vigilant and in epidemiological surveillance in the event of importation and resurgence of the virus, the latter having no borders,” commented the specialist. . It should be noted, finally, that the enterovirus laboratory of the Pasteur Institute of Algeria is considered “a reference” by the WHO in terms of poliomyelitis surveillance.
