The newspaper Litter reported this Tuesday that the planning college, a body of experts responsible for issuing opinions in certain appeal procedures in the capital, recommends that the Brussels government refuse the planning permit granted for the extension of the Woluwe Shopping Center.
In 2019, the Dutch real estate company Eurocommercial, which had already acquired the entire complex since 2018, submitted a request to extend the shopping center to the corner of rue Saint-Lambert and cours Paul-Henri-Spaak. The extension project provides, among other things, nearly 8,000 m² of commercial space, 71 apartments on the upper floors, as well as two levels of underground parking.
A project which has been going on for a long time and which was the subject of numerous modifications in 2022, before finally being granted a permit in the summer of 2023. Faced with this situation, the municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert which does not see its fears extinguished, however, decided to lodge an appeal, pointing out in particular an insufficient creation of green spaces compared to regional requirements, or even an insufficient number of parking spaces for cars. “The project suffers from a lack of overall coherence”, indicates the Town Planning College in a document consulted by our colleagues, which concludes that “the requested town planning permit must be refused”.
The Brussels government now has 60 days to decide whether or not it follows the college’s opinion.
