Jeddah: The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has started implementing new travel safety guidelines from today (November 20, 2023). Air travelers in Saudi Arabia will benefit from travel rights under travel protection guidelines from today. As a result, passengers who face travel disruptions will get substantial compensation and security.
As per the guidelines, the respective airlines are liable to pay Rs 6,568 in compensation for lost or damaged luggage, ensuring that no loss is caused due to mishandling of passengers’ belongings.
The new regulations and rules are being implemented as part of a wider system designed to protect passenger rights and improve the quality of services provided by airlines.
Passengers will be protected and compensated in case of flight delay or cancellation, non-availability of seat due to overbooking, change in booked ticket class etc. Between 150 and 200 percent of the ticket price will be refunded.
In the event that a passenger with special needs, such as the differently-abled, is denied boarding or provided with inadequate facilities, airlines will be obligated to pay compensation of 500 riyals or 200 percent of the ticket price, ensuring that their travel experience is as seamless as possible.
Also, the new framework ensures that passengers are not stranded at unscheduled airports. Compensation is fixed at around 500 Riyals per incident. Passengers facing overbooking can expect a refund of up to 200 percent of the fare as compensation. Meanwhile, if the seat is allotted by downgrading from the ticket class taken by the passenger, he is entitled to 200 percent compensation.
Also, the compensation has been significantly increased to 740 Riyals for the first day and 300 Riyals for each subsequent day up to five days, depending on the delay of baggage delay. It has been decided to levy compensation to incentivize airlines to handle baggage quickly and efficiently. Passengers who face delays of more than three hours on the runway will be entitled to compensation under the new rules as part of ground delay relief.
