• A 1966 Ford GT40 Mk 1 will be offered at auction next January.

The Ford GT40, produced from 1964 to 1969, was elevated to the rank of legend in the history of motorsport, because it was with it that Ford managed to dethrone Ferrari at the famous 24 hour race of Le Mans.

In fact, Ford won this event four years in a row, from 1966 to 1969, with a car that was designed with this single mission in mind.

Sources regarding production numbers vary (105 here, 131 there, 124 at times), but one thing is certain; the print run was limited. All this means that the model has a rather extraordinary value on the market. When a copy appears at an auction, eyes turn towards it.

This is what will happen next January, when the Mecum group will hold an event there where one of the 31 examples built for the road, a GT40 Mk I, will be offered. The whole thing will take place in Kissimmee, Florida.

According to the ad that informs us of the sale, the car has only covered 13,442 miles since new and has never been involved in an accident. One of its first owners was Italian Umberto Maglioli, who was a factory driver for Porsche and Ferrari, and winner of prestigious events such as the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Targa Florio.

Mecum does not mention the chassis number, but says the car will come with its original build sheet and a history file signed by Ronnie Spain, a renowned expert when it comes to the GT40. A previous restoration carried out by the German company Ruf is also highly detailed.

The GT40 has benefited from different mechanics over time. Like most, the version offered is powered by a 4.7-liter V8 that is equipped with Weber carburetors. A five-speed manual gearbox links the mechanics and the rear wheels.

The example offered is dressed in metallic blue. It is also equipped with Borrani rims and a black leather interior.

The auction will take place on January 12.

The record price for a Ford GT40 goes to a 1968 example which sold for 11 million USD in 2012.
